How I decided to be a therapist
As a first-generation immigrant in the United States, I found out through volunteering at hospitals and senior centers that many people face mental health issues. I wanted to become a professional who could help those in need, so I started my Master's in Art Therapy & Counseling. Through my work at Evanston Elementary School, Sarah's Circle homeless shelter, and KANWIN domestic violence organization, I discovered my passion for psychopathology-based psychotherapy. Working at Alexian Brothers Psychiatric Hospital further expanded my experience as a mental health professional.
How I would like to help clients as a therapist
The core focus of my work as a therapist is to utilize the creative process as a powerful tool for healing and achieving overall wellness. Throughout our therapeutic journey together, I actively encourage clients to utilize art materials to delve into their thoughts, emotions, and experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of themselves and expanding their capacity for wellness. Together, we create a safe and supportive space that embraces the past, present, and future, providing an empathic and culturally competent environment for growth and healing. Ultimately, my goal is to be a facilitator and a partner in my client’s healing journey, guiding them toward greater self-awareness, resilience, and interpersonal effectiveness. By combining evidence-based practices, trauma-informed care, and the transformative power of art, I strive to empower my clients to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.
What my theoretical orientation is as a therapist
I prioritize the use of trauma-informed care and evidence-based techniques in my counseling practice, while also drawing on a variety of theories to provide comprehensive and compassionate support to my clients. My approach uses a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), with a focus on promoting positive behavior change, effective emotion management, cognitive flexibility, and self-acceptance. I also use various forms of visual art, including drawing, painting, and mixed media, combined with creative dance/movement, drama, and singing.
