How I decided to be a therapist

I wanted to become a mental/ behavioral health counselor because I have a desire to help others who may be struggling to understand or cope with their mental health issues as well as dealing with day to day stressors in their lives.  Being a Veteran myself, I have a great passion for working with the military community.

How I would like to help clients as a therapist

I am focused on ensuring that my clients see real progress: my style is interactive, non-judgmental, and positions clients as the experts on where they are now, and where they want to go. I am sensitive to the influence of past experiences on present challenges, and work closely with clients to reframe the narrative of their life in a way that increases self-confidence and compassion.

My first priority in starting with a new client is ensuring that they feel safe, heard, and like an equal partner in the therapeutic process.

What my theoretical orientation is as a therapist

I use a collaborative approach rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, an evidence-based approach that focuses on helping clients understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, so that they can begin to make targeted change. I also work to help clients understand their physical response to external stressors, and begin to problem-solve ways to introduce moments of calm, to choose to respond rather than react in the face of change.
