How I decided to be a therapist

My pursuit to become a therapist started from the understanding that all humans are resilient and capable of change, and I wanted to play a supportive role in that journey. My passion is to normalize seeking mental health services and to make it accessible to all. During my previous career in the design field, I volunteered at women shelters and homeless shelters to teach art intervention classes. These classes were intended to provide a healthy outlet to express, and cope with, emotions affected by challenging life circumstances. Over time, I witnessed the transformative power of human connection, self expression, and learning new skills. This experience eventually led me to a career change in order to provide more direct and in-depth mental health services.

How I would like to help clients as a therapist

As a therapist I strive to empower clients with greater self-awareness and helpful tools to navigate life’s challenges. I consider each person within the context of their unique environment. This ensures careful assessment and individualized treatment plans that are strengths-based, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed. My aim is to equip clients to be the expert of their lives and to achieve their desired goals in therapy. This is done so by establishing a positive, empathetic, and non-judgmental therapeutic alliance, in which we work as collaborators.

What my theoretical orientation is as a therapist

I take an integrated approach based on a client’s clinical needs. The primary theory that informs my practice is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), although I adapt different theoretical approaches as needed. I work closely with clients to identify and adjust unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors to effectively regain control over their emotional concerns. I have specialized clinical training in counseling victims/survivors of gender-based violence as well as other forms of trauma and abuse. While I consider every client within their unique experiences and identities, I also reflect on the broader structural factors impacting the client. As a clinical social worker, my practice often includes advocacy for underprivileged and underrepresented populations.
